Trish's story of the birth of little Lottie on 11th August 2006

Lead Doula: Emma

Emma supported me throughout the birth of my daughter, and was consistent, caring and enthusiastic.

The labour was relatively short, just 6 hours and my partner was stuck abroad, so Emmas support was invaluable. She worked with my birth plan and had a good understanding of my wishes for this birth and followed them through to the letter. This was very supportive, my midwife was present for the last half of the labour and Emma and she worked alongside each other in a professional manner.

I found birthing fairly painful and frightening and Emma was able to talk encouragingly, explaining for example, the pros and cons of having one internal examination, despite my reluctance!! Emma seemed to enjoy her role and was pleasant to all concerned.

Pain relief was enabled by Emma, supporting me with my tens machine, gas and homeopathic remedies. My partner finally arrived for the last half hour of my labour, and Emma went downstairs leaving us to welcome our daughter in private. Key things which were particularly helpful were Emmas calm manner, her consistent encouragement and her all round knowledge of the birthing process.

I would be pleased to have Emma alongside at my next birth as I know she would support me and encourage me throughout.
